Question 4:
The most common theme in our classes posts about our internet habits is no surprise, Facebook. And why wouldn’t it be? Facebook has done something many other social networking sites tried and failed to do. Connect people completely. Yes, in some cases it’s a mindless connection and can even be connections with people we don’t know. But by giving Facebook our privacy and sharing our lives we are able to connect with anyone we want. Being from Nebraska I am constantly chatting with friends from home, or keeping up with the latest gossip of my high school friends, most of whom stayed in Nebraska. It is also a way to connect with family in other places (even my grandparents have Facebooks!).
Another common theme was “waste time” and “mindless”. Most of the web surfing we do takes no effort and little thought. When you stumble upon or online shop, look up sports scores and stories, and tweet you’re taking in information but often not really digesting it or thinking about it. On some occasions when reading news articles or things we find interesting we will stop to process the information but I can say for myself and it seems to be most of us….the majority of what we read/see on the internet doesn’t stay with us for very long.
We also don’t seem to be writing much on the internet either…aside from emails and an occasional wall post here and there most of the sites we visit are to provide entertainment…not for us to entertain. We’ve become a society where we want people and things to make us laugh, keep us busy when we’re bored, and take our minds off of stressful things. The internet while a HUGE information outlet is in most of our young adult lives a boredom or stress relief!
